Day One – Setting Sail from Sint Maarten to Grand Case

After spending several wonderful weeks at Kazanu, the clothing-optional property in Oyster Pond on the French side of Saint Martin, Penny and I were eagerly anticipating the next chapter of our Caribbean vacation: a week-long sailing adventure aboard the Manava, a beautiful catamaran operated by Captain Len of SailNude.com.

Our adventure began when Tim Roosens, the owner of Kazanu, kindly drove us to the Port de Plaisance marina, where Manava was waiting for her passengers.

A Warm Welcome Aboard Manava

From the moment we stepped aboard, we knew we were in for a special experience. We were welcomed with glasses of chilled Prosecco, and once all the guests had arrived, everyone gathered to enjoy an inviting selection of cheeses, crackers, cured meats, pickles, olives, and other delicious snacks.

It was a relaxed and enjoyable way to meet our fellow passengers and settle into what would be our floating home for the next seven days.

Captain Len conducted a thorough safety briefing, familiarizing everyone with the vessel, its equipment, and the procedures we would follow during our voyage.

Hospitality was evident right from the beginning. Drinks were plentiful, and Roelz was always happy to prepare and serve whatever passengers requested. We were also encouraged to familiarize ourselves with the beverage supplies so we could help ourselves whenever the crew was occupied with sailing duties.

It was immediately apparent that this would be a relaxed, informal sailing experience where everyone could feel comfortable and at home.

Leaving Simpson Bay Behind

Our first stop after departing the dock was the fuel station. Manava had only recently completed her voyage from Grenada to Sint Maarten, and her fuel tanks needed replenishing before we began our week of island exploration.

With approximately 30 minutes to wait for the Simpson Bay bridge to open, Captain Len took us on a leisurely cruise around Simpson Bay Lagoon. It was an opportunity to enjoy the scenery, watch the activity on the water, and begin adjusting to life aboard.

Once the bridge opened, we passed through into Simpson Bay and headed out into the Caribbean Sea.

Our destination for the first evening was Grand Case, a picturesque seaside village on the French side of Saint Martin, famous for its restaurants, beautiful beach, and spectacular sunsets.

A Spectacular Cruise Along Saint Martin’s Coastline

One of the pleasures of sailing around Saint Martin is seeing its magnificent coastline from an entirely different perspective.

As we made our way westward and then northward around the island, we enjoyed views of several of Saint Martin’s most beautiful beaches.

We watched aircraft approaching Princess Juliana International Airport, a sight that never gets old, particularly when viewed from the water.

Continuing along the coastline, we passed Cupecoy Beach, Baie Longue, Plum Bay, Baie Rouge, and Happy Bay. Many of these beaches are familiar to naturists visiting the island, but seeing them from the deck of a catamaran adds an entirely new dimension to their beauty.

We continued past Marigot Harbour before making our way to Grand Case, where Captain Len selected our anchorage for the evening.

An Evening Swim in Grand Case

Once safely anchored, it was time for a swim.

Everyone gathered at the stern of Manava and enjoyed the warm Caribbean water. As daylight faded, the underwater lighting beneath the catamaran transformed the water between the two hulls into a beautifully illuminated swimming area.

If you’ve never experienced swimming behind a catamaran at night with underwater lights illuminating the sea, it’s something quite special.

The gentle movement of the water, the glow beneath the boat, and the peaceful surroundings of Grand Case made for a memorable first evening.

Dinner Aboard – A Wonderful Culinary Experience

After our swim, we were treated to an outstanding dinner that demonstrated sailing aboard Manava is about much more than simply getting from one beautiful destination to another.

Our meal began with a delicious salad featuring a variety of fresh lettuces, pear, and cheese, finished with a balsamic dressing.

The main course was beautifully prepared snapper served over mashed potatoes with a white wine reduction glaze, accompanied by chargrilled asparagus and carrots.

It was the sort of meal you might expect at one of Grand Case’s excellent restaurants, except we were enjoying it aboard our own private floating retreat, anchored just offshore.

With good food, drinks, and pleasant company, the evening unfolded at a leisurely Caribbean pace.

Our Floating Home for the Week

Following dinner, everyone relaxed and enjoyed conversation before retiring for the evening.

The accommodations aboard Manava were another pleasant feature of the experience. Each guest cabin offered a comfortable queen-size bed and its own private bathroom, complete with a shower.

The cabins were surprisingly spacious, providing a welcome level of comfort and privacy for a week at sea.

As we settled in for our first night aboard, gently anchored off Grand Case, it was hard to imagine a better beginning to our sailing adventure.

We had enjoyed a warm welcome, beautiful coastal scenery, a refreshing swim, an excellent dinner, and the company of new sailing companions.

And this was only our first day.

Tomorrow, our adventure continues as we wake up aboard Manava for our first full day in the Caribbean.

What started as a simple opportunity for guests to share a meal has become one of the highlights of staying at Kazanu. In fact, these gatherings have earned a reputation among guests as “the best meal on the island!”

Tim tries to organize a potluck dinner each week, inviting guests who wish to participate to prepare and share one of their favourite dishes. Naturally, not everyone can attend every gathering. Saint Martin offers so many wonderful restaurants, beaches, and activities that guests often have other plans. However, most visitors manage to join at least one dinner during their holiday, while those enjoying extended stays of a month or longer often participate two or three times.

A Feast of Homemade Favourites

What makes the Kazanu potluck dinners so special is the incredible variety of food that appears on the table. Each guest brings something different, often a favourite recipe from home, creating an international dining experience that rivals some of the island’s finest restaurants.

Over the years, the Kazanu deck has hosted an impressive selection of dishes, including delicious shrimp pasta, perfectly baked salmon, tender grilled ribs, juicy grilled chicken, and beautifully prepared steak, chicken, shrimp, and vegetable kabobs.

The barbecue is frequently put to good use, with grilled peppers, Italian sausage slices freshly grilled and dusted with Parmesan cheese, and other delicious creations making their way to the table.

Accompanying the main courses are baked potatoes with a variety of toppings, an assortment of warm and cold salads, homemade guacamole, and an ever-changing selection of appetizers and side dishes. Fresh baguettes from the local Bread and Butter pastry shop are another popular addition to the evening’s feast.

The wonderful thing about a potluck is that no two dinners are ever quite the same. The menu depends entirely on who is visiting Kazanu and what everyone decides to prepare. There is always plenty of variety, and quite often, guests discover a new favourite dish or exchange recipes with their fellow travellers.

And Then Comes the Gelato!

No Kazanu potluck dinner would be complete without dessert, and this is where Tim has established another popular tradition.

To finish the evening, Tim provides delicious Italian gelato from Gelateria Milano in Philipsburg, a favourite treat that guests have come to look forward to.

After an evening of sampling homemade dishes, enjoying good conversation, and perhaps going back for a second helping, a serving of authentic Italian gelato is the perfect finishing touch.

    Some days stay with you long after you leave the island. For Penny and I, one of those days was our perfect naturist day at sea with SailNude.com aboard the stunning 50-foot catamaran Manava.

    On Tuesday, March 24th, we joined a small group of 16 guests for what turned out to be one of the best day trips we’ve ever experienced in Sint Maarten.

    A Small-World Connection at the Dock

    We met Captain Len at Port de Plaisance Marina, where Manava was docked and ready. In a great coincidence, Len is originally from the Vancouver, BC area – just like Penny and I. That instant connection made the day feel even more personal right from the start.

    We were joined by my sister-in-law Kathy and brother-in-law Chris, and all four of us were immediately welcomed aboard.

    Len personally greeted each guest and introduced us to Chef Roelz, the cook and crew member. Roelz, a very beautiful and talented chef, played a huge role in making the day unforgettable.

    A Warm Welcome and Relaxed Atmosphere

    After a safety briefing, we were treated to a continental breakfast of pastries, breads, cheese, and fresh coffee. The open bar was already flowing with beer, wine, champagne, and Chef Roelz excellent rum punch.

    One thing that stood out early was the friendly atmosphere onboard. Guests quickly began chatting, laughing, and getting to know one another. By the end of the day, it felt like a group of friends rather than strangers.

    In fact, Penny and I met a couple from Ephrata, Washington – a place we drive through every summer on our way to Soap Lake. Small world moments like that made the experience even more memorable.

    One of the most memorable aspects of the day was how natural and comfortable everything felt once we were out on the open water. After leaving the harbour, guests gradually disrobed, and within a short time, everyone was simply enjoying the freedom of being nude together.

    There was nothing awkward or uncomfortable – quite the opposite. Len and Rules fostered a respectful, welcoming environment that encouraged friendly, healthy naturism. Everyone felt at ease, and any initial hesitation quickly disappeared.

    Spending the entire day without clothing created a unique sense of connection — not just with the beautiful Caribbean surroundings, but with each other as well.     As sailors Chris and I, I helped Roelz cast off and stow the fenders as we cruised through Simpson Bay Lagoon toward the 10:30 bridge opening.

    After a short wait with other vessels, the bridge opened and we made our way out to sea. Once clear of the harbour, the atmosphere shifted – guests disrobed, and we all enjoyed the freedom of sailing nude on the open Caribbean waters.

    Our final stop was Baie Longue, near the beautiful La Samanna.

        Penny and I have always gravitated toward naturist beaches. There was something about the openness, both physical and emotional, that felt immediately familiar to us. Long before international travel became a routine part of our lives, Wreck Beach had already earned a special place in my heart. Its closeness to home and its welcoming, year-round community made it more than just a beach; it became a gathering place, a social hub, and a source of lasting friendships.

        When we traveled, that instinct followed us. In Hawaii, we inevitably found ourselves drawn to Little Makena Beach; and Secret Beach on Maui. Even in destinations that weren’t officially naturist, we always seemed to find quiet, secluded places where we could shed our clothes and simply be ourselves. Time and again, we discovered something remarkable: naturist beaches made it easy to meet genuinely kind, open-hearted people.

        At Wreck Beach, that sense of community grew into friendships that extended well beyond the sand, offering social connections throughout the year. And on Little Makena Beach, we met one of our closest friends and someone who would unknowingly change the course of our future travels. This is where our Saint Martin story begins.

        An Invitation That Changed Everything

        After breakfast, the daily decision awaits us: linger at Kazanu or explore the island’s extraordinary beaches. Saint Martin offers endless possibilities:

        Some days call for adventure beyond the main island. A trip to the north side of Pinel Island, followed by relaxed island vibes at Karibuni, delivers calm waters and postcard-perfect scenery. Often, we combine beach days with grocery stops, picking up fresh local ingredients to enjoy later back at Kazanu.

Staying late for a lemon liqueur toast with the “Lemon Droppers” is always a memorable highlight.

        Dinner might take us to Porto Cupecoy or Simpson Bay, where the dining scene consistently impresses. On quieter days, especially after Happy Bay or Orient Beach, we return to Kazanu for a relaxed grilled dinner by the pool or a meal in nearby Oyster Pond.
